The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has appointed a new field commander in Borno State following the killing of its top leader in the Timbuktu Triangle, SUNTV Global has learned.
Security sources disclosed that the terror group named Abu Khalifa as its new commander in the strategic Timbuktu Triangle area after its former commander, Julaibib, was neutralised by Nigerian troops.
According to the sources, the decision was taken after internal consultations among ISWAP’s leadership and was confirmed to counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama on Monday.
Julaibib was reportedly killed during a coordinated military operation carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in the Kimba axis of Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.
Security intelligence revealed that the loss of Julaibib forced ISWAP to swiftly reorganise its command structure in the area, which is considered a key operational hub for the group.
“Intelligence reports indicate that Abu Khalifa has been appointed as the new ISWAP commander in the Timbuktu Triangle to replace Julaibib,” a security source said.
The group is yet to formally announce a second-in-command. However, a senior ISWAP figure known as Tuja is reportedly being considered by fighters as the leading candidate for the deputy commander position.
The development comes amid intensified military offensives by Nigerian troops targeting ISWAP and Boko Haram enclaves across the southern axis of Borno State, as security forces sustain efforts to weaken the operational capacity of insurgent groups in the region.
