At least 40 people have been brutally killed following a deadly terrorist attack on Kasuwa Daji market, located along the Sokobara–Tunga Demo axis in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, SUNTV Global Channel has learned.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday during peak market activities, left the rural community devastated, with dozens of lifeless bodies littering the market and surrounding areas, while an unknown number of women and children were abducted by the assailants.
In a disturbing video obtained by SUNTV Global Channel, corpses were seen scattered across the market, as thick smoke billowed into the sky—evidence that shops and nearby villages were set ablaze during the assault.
“They Were Slaughtered Like Animals”
Eyewitnesses and community leaders told SUNTV Global Channel that the attackers stormed the market, rounded up residents, shot some on the spot, and tied others with ropes before killing them in groups.
“Many people were arrested; some were shot immediately, while others were tied and gathered in one place before they were slaughtered like goats and chickens,” a community representative said.
Residents said smoke from the burning market could be seen from several neighbouring villages long before news of the massacre filtered through.
“We saw thick smoke rising from Kasuwa Daji, but we didn’t know what was happening until people started calling to tell us the market and surrounding villages had been attacked and burned,” the resident added.
Bodies Still Being Found
As of Sunday, residents said bodies were still being discovered in nearby bushes and around water sources, raising fears that the death toll could climb higher.
“We have already identified about 42 corpses, and another body was later found near a water area,” the source disclosed.
Women, Children Kidnapped
According to residents, the terrorists abducted several women, young girls, and small children while retreating from the community.
“They took away wives, young women, and children. Up till now, we do not know how many people were taken,” the community representative said.
Outrage Over Absence Of Security
Residents expressed deep anger and frustration over what they described as a total absence of security forces during and long after the attack.
“From around 5pm yesterday until this morning, we have not seen a single security personnel,” the resident lamented.
“Parents are crying. Many people cannot find their relatives, and we don’t know if they are alive or dead.”
Community Deserted, Fear Everywhere
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the town has been largely deserted, with many residents fleeing to safer areas amid fears of further attacks. Those who remain are said to be traumatised, homeless, and uncertain about the fate of missing loved ones.
Urgent Call For Government Intervention
The community has issued an urgent appeal to the Nigerian government and security agencies to deploy troops, restore security, and provide humanitarian assistance.
“We are crying out to the government to act immediately,” the resident said.
“This tragedy is too much for rural people to bear. Homes have been destroyed, lives lost, and fear has taken over everywhere.”
SUNTV Global Channel will continue to monitor developments and bring updates as more information emerges.
