Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, making it clear that he is not interested in serving as a vice-presidential candidate under any political arrangement.
Obi made the declaration on Sunday night during an interactive X Spaces discussion, where he addressed supporters and clarified lingering speculations about his political future ahead of the next general election.
According to the former Anambra State governor, his years of preparation, exposure, and engagement with governance were never meant to position him as a deputy, but rather as Nigeria’s next president.
“I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President,” Obi stated.
“I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and I have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President.”
He further assured his supporters that his name would appear on the ballot in 2027, emphasizing the need for collective support and prayers as the political season approaches.
“Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers,” he added.
Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, where he emerged as a major force, breaking the dominance of Nigeria’s two traditional political parties. His candidacy attracted massive support from youths and voters in urban centres across the country.
Following the election, Obi and the Labour Party challenged the outcome, citing alleged irregularities. However, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and later the Supreme Court upheld the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Before his presidential ambition, Obi served two terms as Governor of Anambra State. He assumed office on March 17, 2006, was impeached in November 2006, reinstated in February 2007, and completed his first term before being re-elected for a second term, which ended in March 2014.
Obi had earlier contested as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general election. Since the 2023 polls, he has remained a prominent voice in national political discourse, with increasing focus on the 2027 elections.
