In a recent post on X, United States Congressman Bill Huizenga highlighted what he described as a “positive shift” in the Nigerian government’s approach toward protecting Christians from extremist attacks. The remarks followed his visit to Nigeria as part of a U.S. congressional delegation reviewing the country’s security challenges.
During the trip, Huizenga and his colleagues met with Nigerian officials to discuss the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups, the impact of attacks on civilian populations, and measures to strengthen security across affected regions.
“The Congressional Delegation I led to Nigeria this past weekend provided insight that some attitudes inside the Nigerian Government are beginning to turn in favor of protecting Christians — in addition to taking actions against those terrorizing Christians and moderate Muslims,” Huizenga said.
The visit was part of broader U.S. diplomatic and legislative engagement focused on security cooperation and oversight of counterterrorism efforts in Nigeria. Delegation members also examined the effectiveness of Nigeria’s internal security strategies and government institutions in responding to attacks.
Huizenga’s comments come shortly after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. military carried out targeted airstrikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/ISIS) fighters in northwest Nigeria. In a statement released on Christmas Day, Trump emphasized that the strikes were aimed at militants who have been “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians for years.”
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump said. “The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper.”
The strikes mark a continuation of U.S.-Nigeria security collaboration aimed at curbing extremist violence and protecting vulnerable communities across the region.
