The Nigerian Army has confirmed that Boko Haram insurgents were responsible for the deadly bomb blast that struck a mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, during evening prayers on Wednesday.
The attack occurred at the Gamboru Juma’at Mosque at the height of Maghrib prayers, when a suspected suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque, causing panic, deaths, and injuries among worshippers.
The confirmation was made on Thursday by the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai after preliminary investigations into the incident.
According to the military, at least five worshippers lost their lives, while 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries in the explosion.
In a statement issued by the Theatre Command spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Army said findings revealed that the attack was carried out by Boko Haram elements operating in the North-East region.
Uba disclosed that emergency response teams acted swiftly, evacuating casualties to the General Hospital Maiduguri and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
He explained that two of the injured victims later died at the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition. The remaining injured persons, he said, are stable and receiving appropriate medical care.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the spot,” Uba stated.
The Army said troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), promptly secured and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety.
The military reassured residents of Maiduguri and its environs of their safety, especially during the festive season, noting that security patrols, surveillance, and intelligence operations have been intensified across the city and surrounding communities.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to sustaining the fight against insurgency and preventing further attacks across the North-East region, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security authorities.
