The Northern States Governors’ Forum has strongly condemned the suicide bombing that rocked a mosque at Gomboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, describing the attack as a “barbaric, dastardly and cowardly act” targeted at innocent worshippers during prayers.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday evening during Maghrib prayers, claimed the lives of five people and left at least 35 others injured. A suspected suicide bomber reportedly infiltrated the mosque at the peak of worship, turning a sacred moment of devotion into a scene of grief, panic and anguish.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Forum, its Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, as well as to the families of those killed and injured.
Governor Yahaya said the deliberate targeting of a place of worship amounted to a gross violation of human conscience and religious sanctity, stressing that such acts would only strengthen the resolve of Northern states to remain united against terrorism and violent extremism.
He urged security agencies and authorities in Borno State not to be discouraged or intimidated by the attack, noting that terrorism thrives on fear and division. According to him, sustained unity, resilience and vigilance remain critical in the ongoing efforts to eliminate insurgency and restore lasting peace across the region.
The Forum also called for enhanced security measures around places of worship and other public spaces, especially during festive periods when large crowds are common.
Governor Yahaya assured the people of Borno State of the full solidarity and support of the Northern Governors’ Forum as security agencies intensify efforts to prevent further attacks and protect innocent lives.
He prayed that Almighty Allah grants eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus to the souls of the victims, comforts their families, and grants speedy recovery to those injured. He also prayed for continued strength and wisdom for the leadership of Borno State in confronting ongoing security challenges.
Reaffirming the collective determination of Northern states, the Gombe governor said acts of terror would not break the spirit or unity of the region.
Meanwhile, the Forum also expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of two serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Aminu Sa’ad Ungogo and Sarki Aliyu Daneji.
On behalf of the Northern Governors, Governor Yahaya extended condolences to the government and people of Kano State, especially Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the leadership and members of the Kano State House of Assembly, as well as the families, colleagues and constituents of the deceased lawmakers.
He described their passing as a painful loss to Kano State and democratic governance, noting that both legislators served their constituencies and the state with dedication, commitment and a strong sense of responsibility.
The Forum prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive their shortcomings, grant them Aljannatul Firdaus, and give their families and the people of Kano State the strength to bear the loss.
