The Niger State Government has formally received the remaining 130 abducted pupils and teachers of St. Mary Catholic School, Papiri, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety following the mass kidnapping that shocked the state.
Governor Umaru Bago received the rescued victims on Monday at the Government House in Minna, describing their return as a moment of relief and gratitude for the people of Niger State.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor commended the Federal Government and security agencies for what he described as a coordinated and tireless effort that led to the safe rescue of all the abducted schoolchildren and staff.
“We appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the service chiefs, and all security agencies for playing critical roles in ensuring the remaining Papiri schoolchildren regain their freedom,” Governor Bago said.
He also acknowledged the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, and concerned citizens who contributed in various ways to the successful release of the victims.
“We also commend traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, as well as all concerned citizens whose efforts helped secure the release of all abducted victims of St. Mary Catholic Schools, Papiri,” the governor added.
Governor Bago disclosed that the rescued pupils and teachers would first undergo thorough medical examinations and psychological assessments before being reunited with their families, noting that their wellbeing remains a top priority for the state government.
Speaking at the event, Major-General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the Counter-Terrorism Centre and representative of the National Security Adviser, said the rescue operation was carried out following a direct presidential directive.
According to him, the successful operation involved intense and coordinated efforts by the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies, and international partners.
Major-General Laka reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting schools and safeguarding children’s right to education, stressing that collaboration with state governments and local communities would continue to strengthen long-term, community-based security solutions.
The return of the final batch of victims officially closes one of Niger State’s most distressing school abduction incidents in recent years, restoring hope to affected families and communities.
