Sixty-four days after the abduction of pupils from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, dozens of children remain in captivity, with families continuing to call for intensified efforts to secure their safe return.
The pupils were abducted on May 15, 2026, when suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists reportedly stormed the school shortly after a military patrol had departed the area. During the attack, between 40 and 42 pupils were taken into the Sambisa Forest.
The raid was part of a wider assault on surrounding communities that reportedly left eight people dead, including a newborn baby, while 23 local security volunteers sustained injuries.
More than two months after the incident, parents and community leaders say they are still awaiting concrete information on the children’s whereabouts and the status of rescue operations. Community members have repeatedly appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the pupils home safely.
The incident has renewed concerns over the security of schools in Nigeria’s Northeast, particularly following another reported attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, where armed men disrupted NECO examinations, killed a teacher, and abducted several students.
The continued captivity of the Mussa schoolchildren has drawn comparisons to previous mass school abductions in the region, with families urging authorities to act swiftly and decisively to ensure the children’s safe return.
