The Israeli military has carried out a major airstrike targeting a heavily fortified underground bunker built for Iran’s Supreme Leader beneath a leadership compound in the capital city of Tehran, marking a dramatic escalation in the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran.
According to a report by Sky News, about 50 Israeli fighter jets carried out the operation early Friday morning, striking the underground facility believed to have been constructed to protect Iran’s top political and religious leadership during wartime.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later confirmed the attack, stating that the bunker had been specifically designed to shield the country’s leadership in the event of a major military conflict.
In a video posted on its official account on the social media platform X, the Israeli military said:
“WATCH: ~50 Israeli Air Force fighter jets dismantled Ali Khamenei’s underground military bunker beneath the Iranian regime’s leadership compound in Tehran.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the level of destruction or whether there were casualties inside the underground facility at the time of the strike.
The air raid comes amid intensifying hostilities between Iran on one side and Israel and the United States on the other, following several coordinated military operations across Iranian territory in recent days.
Iranian officials earlier confirmed that at least 555 people had been killed in a wave of U.S. and Israeli bombardments carried out across the country.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society said the attacks have affected 131 cities nationwide, describing the strikes as one of the most extensive military assaults in recent years.
“Following enemy attacks in recent days, so far 131 cities have been involved in the incident,” the organisation said in a statement.
“Five hundred and fifty-five compatriots were martyred, and rescue, relief, transfer, and medical services operations are being carried out continuously.”
Emergency teams have since been deployed across multiple provinces, with more than 100,000 rescue and relief workers placed on high alert as authorities struggle to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis.
The escalating crisis follows earlier reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in previous joint U.S.–Israeli strikes — an incident that has triggered a major political transition within the Islamic Republic.
Following the development, an interim leadership council was formed to manage the country’s affairs during the transition period. The council includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and senior cleric Alireza Arafi.
Speaking after a meeting of the council, President Pezeshkian warned that the death of the country’s supreme leader would not weaken Iran and vowed that the nation would respond to its adversaries.
“America and the Israeli regime should know that martyring the supreme leader of the Islamic Revolution will bring them nothing but humiliation,” he said.
He also called on Iranians to remain united during what he described as a period of national mourning and resistance.
“Our dear nation is mourning this great martyr today, and all of us, with our presence on the scene and in the field, in mosques and streets, must thwart the enemies’ sinister plans with empathy and hand in hand,” he added.
Pezeshkian further warned that Iran’s armed forces are prepared for continued confrontation, saying the military remains ready to strike back at its enemies.
