Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has returned from the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia and visited victims of the recent deadly bomb blasts in Maiduguri.
The governor’s visit comes after coordinated explosions rocked parts of the city, leaving at least 23 people dead and over 100 others injured.
Zulum Meets Victims, Assures Support
During his visit to affected victims, Governor Zulum reassured residents of continued government support, especially for families who lost loved ones in the attack.
He also commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for what he described as swift intervention efforts, including:
- Release of funds for military clearance operations
- Strengthening security around the Lake Chad region
- Deployment of Service Chiefs to Maiduguri
Attack Targeted Civilians During Ramadan
The explosions occurred near the popular Monday Market and at the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital at about 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
Governor Zulum, who was in Saudi Arabia at the time for the religious exercise, had earlier condemned the attack through his spokesperson, describing it as:
“Despicable, cruel, and cowardly… targeting innocent civilians during the holy month of Ramadan.”
Link To Ongoing Military Operations
Zulum suggested that the recent surge in attacks may be linked to intensified military offensives in insurgent strongholds, particularly in the Sambisa Forest.
“The recent surge in attacks is not unconnected with ongoing operations against insurgents,” he noted.
Call For Vigilance Ahead of Eid
Through his media aide, the governor urged residents to remain vigilant, especially as the Eid al-Fitr celebrations approach.
Citizens were advised to:
- Report suspicious movements
- Stay alert in public places and worship centres
- Cooperate with security agencies
Security Forces On High Alert
Zulum assured that security agencies remain fully in control and have put measures in place to prevent further attacks across Borno State and the wider North-East region.
Despite the tragedy, he encouraged residents to remain calm and continue daily activities, emphasizing that efforts are ongoing to restore lasting peace.
