The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a nationwide strategic deployment of police personnel and specialised operational units to ensure a safe, peaceful and crime-free Yuletide season across Nigeria.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the move forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s proactive security framework ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
According to the statement, all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and State Commissioners of Police (CPs) have been instructed to intensify visible policing, conduct sustained patrols, carry out intelligence-led operations, and deepen community engagement to enhance public confidence in the Force.
Specialised units placed on heightened alert include the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Command, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Special Intervention Squad, Highway Patrol, Marine Police and the Police Airwing.
The deployment will focus on places of worship, recreational and event centres, markets, motor parks, transport terminals, highways, critical national infrastructure and other high-density public spaces considered vulnerable during the festive period.
“Additional patrol and surveillance teams have been activated to cover major expressways and inter-state routes to curb road-related crimes, traffic disorder and accidents,” the statement noted.
Police officers have also been directed to combine firmness with professionalism and courtesy while carrying out their duties.
The IGP further ordered sustained operations against identified criminal blackspots, forests, flashpoints and suspected hideouts nationwide, stressing the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to achieve comprehensive security coverage.
While wishing Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, Egbetokun urged citizens to remain vigilant, celebrate responsibly and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through official emergency channels.
“The Nigeria Police Force reassures Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the Yuletide season and beyond,” the statement added.
