A Yoruba-speaking Islamic cleric, Shafiy Adeba, has reportedly sparked controversy following comments in a social media video in which he allegedly advocated violence and the enslavement of non-Muslims.
Adeba reportedly made the remarks in a video shared on his TikTok account on Sunday, speaking mainly in Yoruba while also making references to the Quran and using Arabic expressions.
In the video, the cleric allegedly claimed that Muslims have a religious right to fight and enslave non-Muslims, whom he repeatedly referred to using the Arabic term “kafir,” commonly translated as disbeliever or non-believer.
He also allegedly called for the enforcement of what he described as Islamic laws on non-Muslims and made statements advocating attacks against them.
The remarks have generated concern because of their potentially inflammatory nature, particularly in Nigeria, where Muslims and Christians live across many communities and where religious tensions have previously contributed to violence.
Adeba further allegedly warned that Muslims could face retaliation if they failed to impose the laws he referenced.
