The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to evacuate 83 more Nigerian citizens from South Africa amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks, Afrophobia and discrimination against foreigners.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the returnees are expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
According to the ministry, the Nigerians will depart Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, at 3:35 p.m. local time aboard South African Airways and are expected to arrive in Lagos at approximately 8:45 p.m.
The latest evacuation was made possible through the intervention and sponsorship of air tickets by private individuals who volunteered to support Nigerians affected by the situation.
The ministry said the latest development comes after the conclusion of the government’s voluntary repatriation programme, through which nearly 1,490 Nigerians were previously repatriated from South Africa amid concerns over attacks and discrimination.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians living both at home and abroad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on corporate organisations, state governments, the organised private sector and other well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts aimed at protecting citizens facing consular emergencies.
It further stated that Nigeria would continue diplomatic engagements with South Africa to address the root causes of Afrophobia, prevent attacks and ensure that perpetrators of violence and discrimination against Nigerians are held accountable.
The ministry commended the private individuals who sponsored the latest evacuation, describing their intervention as an example of a broader “whole-of-society approach” to protecting Nigerians abroad.
