The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike, citing non-payment of March 2026 salaries and the exclusion of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) from lecturers’ pay.
In a notice to members, the branch chairperson, Jurbe Joseph Molwus, directed all lecturers to immediately suspend lectures, examinations, statutory meetings, and other academic activities until the salary issues are resolved.
“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of exams, and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” the statement read.
The union attributed the delay to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, emphasizing that the university’s bursary department had completed its part in the salary process.
“From our consultation, the delay is occasioned by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation as the bursary of the University has done its part in the process of salary payment,” the union said.
ASUU warned that a strike monitoring team has been activated to ensure full compliance among members, stating that authorities are taking lecturers’ patience for granted.
“It seems our patience is being taken for granted by those who are determined to frustrate industrial harmony,” the union said.
The University of Jos strike is part of growing unrest in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, as lecturers nationwide continue to decry delays in salary payments. Lecturers at institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, and Federal University Birnin Kebbi have also reported non-payment of March salaries, particularly impacting staff during the Easter period.
A professor at Ahmadu Bello University, Abdelghaffar Amoka, lamented the timing of the delays, noting that workers are forced to celebrate festive periods without pay.
“This has become a pattern, but this particular delay shows a lack of consideration. People have families to cater for, especially during festive periods like this,” he said.
The ASUU strike at the University of Jos adds to ongoing concerns over the welfare of Nigerian academics, highlighting the continued tension between university staff and federal authorities over unpaid salaries and allowances.
