The United States government has issued an urgent security alert advising its citizens currently in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza to remain indoors as tensions and security threats continue to escalate across the region.
According to an official advisory released on March 4, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem urged Americans to immediately shelter in place and remain inside secure buildings until further notice.
The embassy emphasized that the U.S. government is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving security situation and remains committed to providing timely information to help citizens make informed safety decisions.
Officials also confirmed that Americans seeking assistance to leave the region can request help through a Crisis Intake Form available on the U.S. government’s travel website. Authorities warned applicants not to submit the form multiple times to avoid delays in processing.
The embassy further revealed that both the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and its branch office in Tel Aviv are currently operating under strict shelter-in-place orders for all remaining emergency personnel and their families.
As part of the emergency measures, all routine in-person American Citizen Services have been suspended until March 6, while emergency services remain temporarily postponed.
For Americans considering evacuation, the embassy said limited travel options are available through Egypt. Tourists may access the Taba Border Crossing using shuttle services arranged by Israel’s Ministry of Tourism.
Travelers crossing into Egypt are advised to prepare for a three-to-four-hour journey from Taba to Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, where international flights are available. U.S. consular officers may also be stationed in Taba to provide limited assistance to citizens.
Authorities warned travelers to carry sufficient cash, noting that ATMs at the border crossing are often unreliable. Travelers may also obtain a 30-day visa on arrival for $30, allowing movement within the Sinai Peninsula and access to flights departing from Sharm el-Sheikh.
Alternatively, Americans may leave through Jordan by traveling to Eilat and crossing via the Yitzhak Rabin Border Crossing into Aqaba, where King Hussein International Airport offers international flight connections.
The embassy cautioned that the security environment remains highly volatile, with potential threats including rocket fire, mortar attacks, missile strikes, and drone incursions that could occur without warning.
Residents were instructed to treat all emergency sirens as genuine threats and immediately seek shelter while following instructions from local authorities.
The U.S. government also warned that travel restrictions affecting American personnel and their families could change without notice, including limitations on visiting certain parts of Jerusalem’s Old City and areas within the West Bank.
Americans in the region were advised to keep their mobile phones charged, locate the nearest bomb shelter, maintain communication with relatives, avoid public demonstrations, and closely monitor major news updates.
Officials further encouraged citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and emergency guidance.
“The security environment is complex and can change quickly,” the embassy warned in its advisory.
