United States President Donald Trump has paid more than $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after a federal court authorised the release of funds following the conclusion of the appeals process in a civil case that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
According to court documents made public on Tuesday, Carroll received a total payment of $5,625,005.48, representing the original $5 million damages awarded by a federal jury in 2023, together with post-judgment interest that accumulated while the case remained under appeal.
The payment was reportedly transferred on July 9 to the law firm representing Carroll after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered the release of nearly $5.8 million that had been deposited during the appeal process.
The development follows the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to decline Trump’s request to review the case, effectively allowing the lower court’s judgment to stand.
In a statement after receiving the payment, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said the verdict had now been fully enforced.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment awarded by the jury.”
The legal dispute dates back to a civil trial in New York in 2023, where a federal jury concluded that Trump sexually abused Carroll inside a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman department store during the mid-1990s and later defamed her by publicly denying her allegations.
Although the jury did not find Trump liable for rape under New York law, it ruled that he was liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages.
Trump consistently denied the allegations throughout the legal proceedings and pursued multiple appeals in an effort to overturn the verdict. However, those appeals were unsuccessful, leading to the release of the judgment funds.
Despite the payment, Trump’s legal battle with Carroll is not over. In a separate civil defamation case arising from additional public statements made about Carroll, another New York jury awarded her $83 million in damages. That judgment remains under appeal and has not yet been paid.
The latest payment closes one chapter of the long-running legal dispute, while the larger defamation case continues to move through the U.S. court system.
