The administration of Donald Trump is moving to impose terrorism sanctions on the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a step that could place the group under sweeping restrictions within the United States.
The announcement was made on Monday by the United States Department of State, which said the decision forms part of Washington’s broader counter-terrorism strategy aimed at organisations considered security threats.
According to the department, the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood will initially be placed on the Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) sanctions list before an additional designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).
Officials said the process is expected to take effect on March 16.
In a statement, the State Department said the move would subject the organisation to strict sanctions under U.S. law, including financial restrictions and legal penalties for anyone found supporting the group.
Once the designation is fully implemented, individuals or organisations within the United States will be prohibited from providing funding, resources, or any form of material support to the group.
Authorities say the measure is part of Washington’s wider efforts to disrupt networks believed to have links to extremist activities and to strengthen international counter-terrorism enforcement.
However, the State Department did not immediately provide additional details regarding how the sanctions will be enforced or whether other affiliated groups could also face similar actions.
