Popular influencer and financial commentator GehGeh has defended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu over her recent remarks encouraging Nigerians to consider small businesses while waiting for bigger opportunities, arguing that many people misunderstood her message.
Speaking during an appearance on the Echoo Room podcast, GehGeh said the First Lady’s comments were intended to encourage self-reliance rather than demean Nigerians.
“If you really pay attention to what she was saying, she was simply encouraging Nigerians to start with whatever little opportunity they have while waiting for something bigger. That’s the whole idea,” he said.
Addressing criticisms that the advice was out of touch with the realities faced by many Nigerians, GehGeh argued that people should not compare their circumstances with those of the President’s family.
“People say, ‘Why should I be selling akara? Why won’t your children do it?’ They forget that Tinubu’s children and the average Nigerian are not in the same situation,” he stated.
The influencer also commented on the ongoing debate surrounding the use of the word “olodo,” insisting that the term should not always be interpreted as an insult.
When asked whether he considered himself an “olodo,” GehGeh responded in the affirmative, explaining that the label depends on an individual’s area of knowledge or expertise.
According to him, a person may be highly skilled in one profession but inexperienced in another.
“If you remove a banker from banking and place them in another field, they may struggle there. In the same way, if you take a musician and ask them to practise medicine, they would be inexperienced in that profession. So, if someone calls me ‘olodo,’ it simply means there’s something you know that I don’t, just as there are things I know that you don’t,” he said.
GehGeh’s comments have since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing differing opinions on both his defence of the First Lady and his interpretation of her remarks.
