Panic and tension gripped residents of Pulka in Borno State late Saturday night after suspected fighters of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a fierce assault on a Nigerian military camp, setting parts of the facility ablaze during a prolonged gun battle.
According to eyewitness accounts obtained by SUNTV Global Channel, the attack lasted for about one and a half hours, with intense gunfire echoing across the town as insurgents reportedly overwhelmed sections of the base before torching structures inside the camp.
Data from the Fire Incident and Risk Management System (FIRMS) also confirmed signs of fire outbreaks at the military facility during the incident.
Although security operatives were said to have responded to the attack, the exact outcome of the counter-operation remains unclear as of press time. Sources within the community reported that several military personnel may have been killed or injured, but authorities have yet to release official casualty figures.
Fresh Abductions Deepen Fear
The latest assault comes barely a day after suspected fighters linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP abducted five civilians at a busy fish market in Doro Baga, a community in Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.
Local security sources disclosed that the victims were seized early Friday morning while purchasing fish and were later taken to an undisclosed location, triggering fear among traders and residents.
Troops under Operation HADIN KAI, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters, reportedly launched a rapid response after receiving distress calls, while intelligence efforts are ongoing to locate the abducted victims.
Region Still Under Threat
Communities around the Lake Chad axis, including Doro Baga, continue to face recurring attacks, kidnappings, and ambushes by insurgent groups despite sustained military offensives in Nigeria’s North-East.
Residents say fishermen, farmers, and traders remain the most vulnerable, as armed groups frequently target economic hubs to disrupt livelihoods and assert control.
