Panic and devastation have gripped several communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State after heavily armed terrorists reportedly carried out a prolonged attack that lasted more than 10 hours without any visible military intervention.
Residents told SUNTV Global Channel that the assault began around 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, with gunmen storming multiple villages, shooting indiscriminately, burning homes, and forcing hundreds of villagers to flee for safety.
One of the worst-hit communities, Tungadaji, reportedly recorded massive casualties, with local sources claiming that dozens of residents were slaughtered during the attack. However, the exact number of victims could not be independently confirmed as of the time of this report.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror, saying the attackers moved freely from one settlement to another while residents remained helpless.
“They invaded our community early in the morning and kept attacking for hours. Houses were set ablaze, and people were shot as they tried to escape,” a resident recounted.
The violence later spread to Konkoso town, where sources said the attackers continued burning buildings while many residents remained trapped or in hiding.
Survivors said confusion and fear have made it difficult to determine the full scale of casualties or possible abductions, as many families are still searching for missing relatives.
The latest assault came barely 24 hours after suspected fighters linked to Boko Haram reportedly carried out coordinated attacks across Borgu and Agwara areas, killing several residents and destroying homes and shops.
Community sources revealed that the attackers had earlier moved through multiple towns, including Pissa, Zango, and Tungan Makeri, leaving a trail of destruction.
Residents have expressed anger over what they described as a delayed or completely absent security response during Saturday’s prolonged siege.
Many displaced villagers are now seeking refuge in nearby communities, while local leaders are calling urgently for increased military deployment to prevent further attacks.
The situation remains tense as authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
