Tension has reportedly risen in Tungamaje, Abuja, following fresh demolitions allegedly carried out by the Nigerian Army, with residents expressing fear that more houses could be destroyed.
More than 10 houses were reportedly demolished on Thursday, August 20, 2026, leaving affected residents distressed and uncertain about the future of their homes and properties.
Residents told reporters that Army personnel also warned indigenes against constructing new buildings or carrying out further development on their properties, while reportedly indicating that additional demolitions could take place.
Several other houses in the community have reportedly been marked for demolition, heightening concerns among residents who say they are uncertain about where they would relocate if the demolitions continue.
The latest development follows an earlier directive reportedly issued by the Nigerian Army ordering residents of Angwa Dio and Angwa Shibaba, both areas within Tungamaje, to vacate their homes.
Residents were initially given until August 8, 2026, to leave the affected areas. Following intervention by community stakeholders, the deadline was reportedly extended by five days to August 12.
More than 30 houses had previously been identified for possible demolition across the two communities, according to accounts from residents.
Affected homeowners have expressed frustration over the situation, saying many families have invested heavily in their properties and are now facing uncertainty over where they would relocate.
The latest demolitions have further intensified a longstanding dispute between residents of Tungamaje and the Nigerian Army over land ownership, access to farmlands and the use of land in the area.
Residents have previously raised concerns over what they described as attempts to remove them from their ancestral lands.
With additional houses reportedly still marked for demolition, residents are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further destruction and to provide clarity over the ownership and status of the disputed properties.
