The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to Nigerian citizens against participating in foreign armed conflicts, emphasizing that those who do so are acting at their own risk.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, highlighted growing concerns over the illegal recruitment of Nigerians to fight in overseas conflicts, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The ministry disclosed that some Nigerians are being lured under false promises of high-paying jobs, security roles, educational opportunities, or even fast-tracked citizenship.
“Several Nigerians who have fallen victim to such schemes were misled into signing military service contracts and deployed to combat zones,” Tuggar said in a statement released by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The minister warned that recruiters often employ deceptive tactics, including offering large monthly salaries, signing bonuses, and requiring contracts in foreign languages without proper legal guidance. In some cases, travel documents are confiscated upon arrival, and intermediaries facilitate travel under tourist or non-military visas.
“This not only endangers lives but may also violate Nigerian and international laws governing mercenary activities and foreign enlistment,” Tuggar stated.
The ministry is actively engaging domestic and international partners to investigate these illegal recruitment networks and to raise public awareness about their dangers. Nigerian missions abroad have also been directed to strengthen consular vigilance and provide timely advisories to citizens.
Parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions are being urged to educate young Nigerians about the risks of deceptive foreign recruitment schemes. Citizens are advised to verify all overseas employment or study opportunities through official government channels and report suspicious activities to authorities.
“Nigeria remains committed to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of its citizens at home and abroad. Our nationals must not be exploited or trafficked into foreign conflicts under any circumstances,” Tuggar concluded.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which escalated into a large-scale war in 2022, has reportedly claimed millions of lives, affecting both civilians and military personnel.
