Nigeria’s Senate President, , has sounded the alarm over the reported killing of a Nigerian surgeon in , describing the incident as disturbing and a reflection of rising xenophobic violence against Nigerians abroad.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio condemned the alleged attack, claiming the victim was killed by a local mechanic who reportedly accused him of taking jobs meant for citizens.
He expressed deep concern over the growing trend of hostility targeting Nigerians in South Africa, noting that the situation has reached an alarming level that requires urgent government intervention.
According to him, the graphic nature of the incident underscores the seriousness of the issue and the need for decisive action beyond mere statements.
“I have taken personal action already, but this requires a coordinated response. The National Assembly must engage directly with the South African Parliament on this matter,” he said.
Akpabio called for formal legislative engagement between Nigeria and South Africa, urging lawmakers to ensure the issue is debated at the parliamentary level in both countries.
He stressed that Nigerians traveling abroad for legitimate purposes, including professionals and tourists, should not be subjected to violence or discrimination.
Describing the killing as senseless, the Senate President warned that the matter goes beyond rhetoric and requires concrete diplomatic and legislative steps to protect Nigerian citizens.
He also urged his colleagues in the National Assembly to take the issue seriously and push for stronger bilateral actions that would address the recurring cases of xenophobic attacks.
The development adds to growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and working abroad, particularly in South Africa, where past incidents of xenophobic violence have strained relations between both nations.
