Personnel of the Nigerian Army have allegedly assaulted a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver along the busy Ikorodu Road corridor in Lagos, triggering outrage among commuters and transport authorities.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday around the Palmgrove axis, reportedly unfolded while the driver was carrying out his official duty on the designated BRT lane.
Eyewitnesses told SUNTV Global that the driver was strictly maintaining his route when he was intercepted by armed soldiers who had encroached on the restricted lane. The situation quickly escalated, with the uniformed men allegedly dragging and physically assaulting the driver in public view.
One witness described the attack as “completely unprovoked and oppressive,” stressing that the driver committed no offence before the confrontation.
“He was simply doing his job on the BRT lane when the soldiers stopped him and began assaulting him for no justifiable reason,” the source said.
Photos obtained by SUNTV Global reportedly show some of the military personnel involved in the altercation.
The incident has since sparked anger among commuters and residents, many of whom are calling on the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to take decisive action and ensure the safety of transport workers.
Observers say the latest episode reflects a recurring pattern of tension between security operatives and civilian transport officials in Lagos, particularly over the misuse of dedicated BRT lanes.
As of press time, the Nigerian Army had yet to release an official statement on the incident, while LAMATA has not confirmed whether a formal complaint has been filed.
The development has renewed public debate over accountability and the conduct of security personnel in civilian spaces.
