The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 60-year-old resident of Asaba following allegations that he sexually abused two young sisters aged seven and 11.
The disturbing case reportedly came to light after the children’s mother noticed unusual behavior from one of her daughters and became concerned about her wellbeing.
According to information shared by human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu, the mother discovered signs of injury and questioned the child, who allegedly disclosed that a neighbour had been abusing her and had threatened her into silence.
Further inquiries by family members reportedly revealed that the younger sister, aged seven, may also have been subjected to similar abuse involving the same suspect.
The allegations have sparked outrage within the community and renewed calls for stronger protection of children and swift justice for victims of abuse.
Gwamnishu disclosed that he accompanied the family to the police station and commended officers for taking immediate action to ensure the suspect remained in custody.
According to him, the suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The human rights advocate also appealed to the Delta State Government, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development to provide legal, psychological, and welfare support to the affected children and their mother.
He further pledged to assist the family with logistics throughout the legal process to ensure that financial difficulties do not hinder the pursuit of justice.
As of the time of this report, the Delta State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the allegations. Investigations are ongoing.
