Tension gripped residents of Otukpo on Thursday night after unknown gunmen shot dead former local government chairman, Udeh Ijachi, in a brazen attack that has left the community in shock.
Ijachi, popularly known as “Honourable Ukpem,” was reportedly ambushed and killed in front of Okabido Hotel, where eyewitnesses said the attackers suddenly opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Residents who witnessed the incident described moments of chaos and fear as gunshots rang out in the area.
“They just opened fire on him and ran away immediately,” a witness told reporters.
The sound of gunfire quickly drew people from nearby areas as residents and passers-by rushed to the scene, only to discover that the former council boss had been fatally shot.
Ijachi, a well-known political figure in the area, previously served as caretaker chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area and was widely recognized in political and community circles across the state.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the killing. However, sources say investigations are expected to begin immediately to uncover the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.
Community leaders have since called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protection in the area to prevent further violence.
Local officials are reportedly cooperating with security forces and urging residents with useful information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
The motive for the assassination remains unclear.
