WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that any economic or military conflict between the United States and China would have devastating consequences for both nations and the global economy.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News, Rubio described a potential confrontation between the world’s two largest economies as a catastrophe that could destabilise global markets and threaten international security.
“Any conflict between the U.S. and China, whether economic or military, would be catastrophic for both countries and for the world,” Rubio said.
Despite the risks, the U.S. Secretary of State stressed that Washington would not abandon or compromise its national interests simply to avoid tensions with Beijing.
According to Rubio, managing relations with China requires a careful balance between maintaining stability and protecting America’s strategic, economic and security interests.
His remarks come amid ongoing rivalry between Washington and Beijing over trade, technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, military influence in the Indo-Pacific and the future of Taiwan.
Relations between the two powers have become increasingly strained in recent years, with disagreements over semiconductor exports, tariffs, regional security and competing geopolitical ambitions continuing to fuel tensions.
The Taiwan issue remains one of the most sensitive flashpoints between both countries, with China insisting the island is part of its territory while the United States continues to maintain defensive support for Taiwan under existing agreements.
Despite growing competition, both nations have continued diplomatic engagements aimed at preventing their differences from escalating into open confrontation.
Analysts say Rubio’s comments reflect Washington’s broader strategy of countering China’s expanding influence while avoiding a direct conflict that could have severe economic and geopolitical consequences worldwide.
