The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is actively ongoing, dismissing circulating reports suggesting the process has been suspended or abandoned as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by Dr. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, the Assembly clarified that the impeachment formally commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and is being conducted strictly in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to the statement, two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct have already been prepared and sent to Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu by the Speaker of the House. The Assembly is currently awaiting their formal responses, as required by law, before proceeding to the next stages of the impeachment process.
The House emphasized that its actions are fully constitutional, noting that it is empowered to act on behalf of the people to check violations by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other officer of the state government.
Dr. George also condemned what he described as deliberate attempts by some individuals and media platforms to spread misinformation, warning that false reports claiming the impeachment had been halted were meant to mislead the public and create disaffection between the Assembly and the people of Rivers State.
“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public, particularly suggesting that the process has been stopped. These are false narratives designed to sow disunity and confusion,” George said.
He called on the public to disregard such reports, assuring that the impeachment process remains active and on track. He further stated that the House would not be intimidated or distracted by blackmail, threats, or pressure from individuals who do not have the state’s best interests at heart.
The Assembly also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers, support, and encouragement since the commencement of the process. It extended gratitude to stakeholders and leaders at all levels who have engaged constructively.
“Finally, we thank the good people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement, and express our warm regards to all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project,” the statement concluded.
