Kwara State, Nigeria – A wave of relief has swept through Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following the release of 176 women and children who spent six months in captivity after being abducted by suspected terrorists.
The victims, who were reportedly kidnapped during an attack on the community earlier this year, regained their freedom on Wednesday after a security operation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances surrounding the rescue or whether any suspects were arrested.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Government said security personnel successfully rescued the abductees and expressed appreciation to the security agencies and everyone involved in the operation.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Communications, the government commended the efforts of the security forces and acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the mission.
The mass abduction had drawn national attention after a video surfaced months ago showing the victims, including women, children and a nursing mother, in captivity. The footage sparked widespread concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the country.
The victims are expected to undergo medical examinations, psychological support and reunification with their families after enduring months in captivity.
The successful rescue has been welcomed by residents and community leaders, who expressed gratitude for the victims’ safe return while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent future attacks and strengthen protection for vulnerable communities.
Investigations into the kidnapping and the circumstances surrounding the abduction are expected to continue as security authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
