Baba-Ahmed made the revelation during a television interview, confirming that his resignation would take effect at midnight, after which he would formally align with the PRP—a party he described as historically grounded and ideologically consistent.
According to him, persistent internal crises and strategic decisions within the Labour Party made his continued membership untenable.
“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight. There is more to it… what the party stood for is no longer what it is today,” he stated, hinting at deep-rooted disagreements and internal restructuring that he claims were targeted against him.
The former running mate to in the 2023 presidential election said his move is part of a broader political recalibration rather than a personal decision alone.
He described the PRP as a viable platform capable of offering credible leadership and positioning itself as a strong alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Taking a swipe at the ruling , Baba-Ahmed accused the government of focusing more on weakening opposition parties than addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship.
He warned that such trends could push Nigeria toward a one-party state if not checked.
On national security, he criticised the handling of ongoing crises, citing incidents involving the killing of military personnel and stressing that Nigeria’s resources should guarantee better protection for citizens.
Looking ahead to 2027, Baba-Ahmed insisted that any serious presidential contender must have a clean record free from corruption allegations or electoral malpractice. He also urged competent Nigerians who have stayed away from politics to actively participate in shaping the country’s future.
