The Ondo State Police Command has foiled a suspected plot to bomb key government facilities in Akure and other parts of the state, arresting six individuals allegedly linked to the operation.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, said the suspects had secretly moved into the state and conducted surveillance on strategic locations ahead of planned attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
According to him, security operatives acted on intelligence reports, leading to the swift interception of the suspects before the plan could be carried out.
The suspects were identified as Adekunle Prosper (56), Ojo Olumide (39), Tope Kolawole (40), Ahmed Salihu (40), Bolaji Adebowale (40), and Gbadebo Abidemi (43).
Lawal disclosed that a search of their residence led to the recovery of several items believed to be used in the fabrication of explosive devices and other criminal activities. Recovered items include 217 bottles, a bag of sugar, criminal charms, 17 mobile phones, N187,000 in cash, two HP laptops, eight slings, a knife, an external hard drive, identity cards, a National Identity Number card, and two motorcycles.
Preliminary investigations suggest that some of the materials were intended for assembling IEDs, while others may have been used to support coordinated operations.
The police commissioner added that early findings indicate the group was actively working on plans to target government infrastructure, with possible links extending beyond Ondo State.
He noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the network and identify other possible collaborators.
