Residents of Suleja and surrounding communities in Niger State have expressed frustration over the poor condition of the Suleja–Madalla expressway, despite reports that about ₦2.1 billion was spent on road projects in the area within a nine-month period.
According to available records covering January to September 2025, the Niger State Government reportedly expended the funds on township road interventions in Suleja. However, residents say there is little to show for the spending, as the major road remains in a deteriorated and unsafe condition.
The Madalla–Suleja axis, a key route linking Niger State to the Federal Capital Territory, is reportedly still filled with potholes, with sections of ongoing expansion work appearing abandoned or incomplete.
While drainage gutters have been constructed in some areas, residents claim that actual road construction has largely stalled, leaving the project visibly unfinished.
One resident, Ibrahim, described the situation as disappointing, saying gravel was dumped on parts of the road without proper construction work being carried out.
“We thought they would come back and complete the work, but rain washed most of the gravel away,” he said.
Another resident and business owner, Mariam, also complained that the poor state of the road is affecting commercial activities in the area, with traders and motorists struggling daily due to the damaged infrastructure.
Beyond the road project, residents also pointed to the long-delayed Suleja International Market project in the Rafinseyi area, which was meant to serve as a major commercial hub for the region but remains uncompleted years after it was announced.
Reports indicate that although demolition and initial preparations began several years ago, the market has yet to become operational, raising further concerns about stalled government projects in the state.
Observers say the situation has intensified public debate over accountability and the execution of infrastructure projects, especially as citizens demand transparency in how public funds are spent.
As dissatisfaction grows, residents are calling on the Niger State Government to provide clear explanations and ensure completion of abandoned projects.
