A wave of outrage has erupted in following the alleged unlawful detention of a 16-year-old girl by officers of the over a crime reportedly committed by her brother.
The incident occurred in Arandun, Irepodun Local Government Area, where the teenager was said to have been held for three days despite repeated claims by her family that she had no involvement in the alleged theft.
According to sources, the controversy began after the girl’s brother was accused of stealing a generator belonging to a resident in the community. When police were unable to locate the suspect, officers allegedly arrested his mother, who was detained for three days.
Family members claim the woman was forced to pay for the missing generator and also paid money for bail before she was released.
However, the situation reportedly escalated about a week later when officers returned and arrested the woman’s teenage daughter, detaining her at the Arandun police station.
Residents alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) threatened to charge the minor to court, despite being informed of her age and lack of involvement in the case.
The teenager’s detention sparked protests within the community, with neighbours and residents condemning what they described as abuse of power and violation of the girl’s fundamental rights.
In videos circulating online, family members who went to demand her release were seen being chased out of the police station by an officer in plain clothes, further fueling public anger.
Speaking in distress, the girl’s mother appealed to Nigerians for intervention, explaining that she had already been detained and extorted over the same matter before her daughter was arrested.
“My child did nothing. They detained me first, and after releasing me, they came back for my daughter. Please, Nigerians should help me,” she pleaded.
The family has called on the Inspector-General of Police, , to urgently investigate the incident and ensure justice is served.
Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, , confirmed that she had contacted the Divisional Police Officer involved and is awaiting a detailed report on the matter.
“I have established contact with the DPO in Arandun and expect a full briefing on what transpired,” she said.
The incident has reignited concerns over alleged harassment, unlawful detention, and rights violations by security agencies, particularly involving minors and innocent family members.
