Fresh scrutiny has trailed the Imo State government following revelations that it plans to spend N120 million on renovating a staff restaurant for official guests of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
A review of the state’s 2026 approved budget shows that the project targets the refurbishment of the Government House canteen and restaurant facilities, raising concerns over public spending priorities.
Further details indicate that an additional N300 million has been allocated for the reconstruction of the Government House banquet hall—despite reports that N273 million had already been spent on the same project between January and September 2025.
The budget provisions have sparked debate, especially as economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on citizens, with many questioning the necessity of such expenditures.
In another allocation, the Imo State House of Assembly is set to spend N10 million on constructing a lawn tennis court.
At the federal level, similar spending patterns have also drawn attention. Records show that the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure spent N43 million on kitchen utensils for its headquarters in July 2025, according to data from the Govspend portal.
This follows earlier reports that the Presidency, under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, spent N32.2 million in August 2024 on replacing major kitchen items.
Further analysis reveals that a private contractor, Rock of Ages Total Event Limited, received multiple government payments totaling about N250 million within a four-month period in 2024, largely for event decoration services.
Among the disbursements were N68.4 million for Democracy Day decorations and N131.9 million for large-scale State House events organised by the First Lady, covering programmes for women, youths, and children.
The growing list of expenditures on hospitality, decoration, and kitchen-related items has intensified public concern over fiscal discipline and transparency in government spending.
Critics argue that such allocations appear excessive, particularly at a time when authorities frequently cite limited resources as a challenge to governance and service delivery.
