A civic technology platform, MonITNG, has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of a public secondary school in Uyo, Nigeria.
The group called on Governor Umo Eno to urgently intervene, describing the state of Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Four Towns as “shocking” and unsafe for students.
The alarm follows reports by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who highlighted the deplorable learning conditions in the school, located near the state secretariat.
According to findings, the school is in severe disrepair, with:
- Cracked and weakened classroom structures
- Roofs blown off buildings
- Broken floors and leaking classrooms during rainfall
- Absence of desks and chairs, forcing students to stand during lessons
- Missing doors and windows
MonITNG described the situation as a clear case of systemic neglect in the education sector, noting that such conditions exist despite the state reportedly receiving over ₦2.53 trillion in revenue within 32 months, including oil derivation funds.
The platform also criticised what it termed misplaced priorities, alleging that public funds are being diverted to political patronage and luxury spending instead of critical infrastructure like education.
It further pointed out that the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Essien Umoh, is an alumnus of the affected school, yet no significant intervention has been made.
“Children deserve classrooms where they can sit, learn, and thrive — not stand in cracked, leaking rooms,” the group stated.
MonITNG warned that the situation reflects a broader failure in governance and called for immediate renovation, proper furnishing, and improved learning conditions.
The group stressed that urgent action is needed to protect students’ safety and restore confidence in public education across Akwa Ibom State.
