Ottawa City Council has taken the first step towards renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Canadian capital’s Central Park neighbourhood, amid worsening tensions between Canada and the United States.
The council voted unanimously on Wednesday to begin the process of considering a new name for the street, which has carried the Trump name for about 25 years.
According to reports, proposed alternatives include Obama Avenue, Ontario Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue and Taco Avenue.
The move follows renewed calls by Ottawa councillors to remove US President Donald Trump’s name from the street as disagreements between Ottawa and Washington over trade and economic policies intensify.
Councillors have expressed concerns about continuing to honour Trump with a street name in Canada’s capital, citing his repeated criticism of Canada and policies that they say could negatively affect the Canadian economy and national interests.
Riley Brockington, the councillor representing the area, had previously called for the street to be renamed, saying he was embarrassed that Trump’s name remained on a road in Ottawa.
“I’m embarrassed that there is a street in River Ward called Trump Avenue, and I’m embarrassed that in the nation’s capital we have Donald Trump honoured in this respect,” Brockington said, according to local reports.
Trump Avenue is located in the Central Park neighbourhood off Merivale Road in Ottawa’s River Ward. Despite its name, the street was not originally named as a tribute to the US president.
The neighbourhood was developed with several streets named after locations associated with New York City, including Staten Way, Madison Park and Gotham Private.
An earlier attempt to rename the street in 2021 failed after consultations revealed that residents were divided over the proposal. The latest council decision could reopen the process, with residents expected to participate before a final name is selected.
The development comes as relations between Canada and the United States remain strained over tariffs and trade policies. Trump has repeatedly criticised Canada and threatened additional tariffs affecting Canadian industries, including vehicles, auto parts and steel.
The dispute has also taken on a symbolic dimension following Trump’s move to direct the US government to use the name “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario in federal geographic references.
Canadian officials have rejected the proposed change, with federal and provincial leaders continuing to refer to the body of water as Lake Ontario.
The controversy surrounding Trump Avenue and the dispute over the lake’s name have added a new symbolic layer to the broader tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
Ottawa City Council will now proceed with consultations involving affected residents and consideration of possible replacement names before any final decision is made.
