Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called on the international community to impose visa bans and other sanctions on some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over allegations of political violence ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
Governor Adeleke made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the British Government in Osogbo as part of ongoing engagements ahead of the election.
According to the governor, individuals allegedly involved in sponsoring or encouraging political violence should face international consequences, including visa restrictions and economic sanctions.
Adeleke specifically mentioned the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji, and other party leaders, alleging that their actions have contributed to rising political tension in the state.
The governor also urged security agencies to investigate and prosecute anyone found responsible for acts of violence, regardless of political affiliation.
“I have zero tolerance for political violence. Anyone found culpable should be arrested and prosecuted, no matter who they are,” Adeleke said.
He further appealed to security agencies to identify not only those carrying out attacks but also individuals allegedly sponsoring them, stressing that elections should never be associated with violence or loss of lives.
Governor Adeleke’s remarks followed reports of fresh attacks involving members of opposition parties during the ongoing election campaign. The Osun State Government alleged that several people have been killed or injured since political campaigns commenced.
Responding, the visiting British delegation reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in Osun State. The delegation said it would continue engaging political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders to promote a peaceful electoral process.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has consistently denied allegations of sponsoring political violence, maintaining that it remains committed to a peaceful and democratic campaign ahead of the governorship election.
With political activities intensifying, attention remains focused on efforts by stakeholders and security agencies to ensure a free, fair, and violence-free election across Osun State.
