OSOGBO, Osun State, Nigeria — The Osun State Police Command has released the state Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, after he was arrested in connection with a shooting incident that occurred during a political procession in Ilesa.
The police confirmed that the commissioner was released on bail on Sunday afternoon, while an operative of the Amotekun Corps arrested alongside him remains in custody as investigations continue.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the development, stating that Adejoorin was released around 1:00 p.m. on bail.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released around 1.00 p.m. on bail. The Amotekun operative arrested alongside the commissioner and the gun found with him are still with us. However, investigation is still ongoing on the matter,” Ojelabi said.
The commissioner’s arrest followed a shooting incident during a political rally in the Isokun area of Ilesa, where three people were reportedly injured, including a 14-year-old boy identified as Tobi Ilesanmi.
The incident occurred during a street procession organised by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilesa West Local Government Area.
The shooting has led to accusations and counter-accusations between political parties, with the arrest of the commissioner adding further attention to the incident.
According to the police, a vehicle belonging to the Osun State Government was sighted near the rally location, after which individuals suspected to be Amotekun personnel allegedly emerged and fired shots.
The police said some people at the scene attempted to pursue the suspected operatives, but one of them reportedly escaped after allegedly threatening someone with a knife.
Following a distress call, officers from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) were deployed to the area. The team later intercepted a white Lexus 350 vehicle reportedly carrying an Amotekun operative.
The occupants were taken to the police headquarters in Osogbo for questioning to determine their level of involvement in the incident.
Police investigators recovered four expended cartridges from the scene, while a pump-action firearm was also recovered from the Amotekun operative.
The command said the investigation remains ongoing and that further decisions will be made based on the outcome of the inquiry.
