Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the alleged violent attack on opposition leaders in Benin City, describing the incident as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, Atiku reacted to reports that former presidential candidate Peter Obi and other key opposition figures were targeted shortly after a political gathering in Edo State.
Among those reportedly affected were former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, and Olumide Akpata, who were attending a coalition meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku described the attack as “utterly condemnable and unacceptable,” warning that hostile political rhetoric in Edo had created a dangerous atmosphere for opposition actors.
According to him, Nigeria is entering a troubling phase where opposition voices face increasing intimidation, harassment, and now physical threats.
He accused elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fueling tensions through inflammatory statements that could embolden violent actions.
The former vice president also called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to uphold their constitutional duty by ensuring the safety of all political actors, regardless of party affiliation.
He stressed that protecting opposition leaders is not optional but essential to preserving democratic stability.
Witness accounts and a viral video circulating online alleged that suspected attackers mobilised after the ADC meeting, reportedly angered by the large turnout.
The assailants were said to have arrived on motorcycles, fired shots near Odigie-Oyegun’s residence in the Government Reservation Area, damaged vehicles, and caused panic among residents.
Opposition groups, including the Obidient Movement, described the incident as a targeted attack, claiming that armed individuals trailed leaders from the meeting venue.

The situation has further heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures warning of growing intimidation in Nigeria’s political space.
