A group of nurses in Ogun State has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Head of Nursing Services (HNS) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, following allegations of a violent assault on a senior nursing officer within the hospital.
The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF), in an open petition addressed to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and obtained by SUNTV Global Channel on Friday, accused the HNS, Nurse Fagoyinbo Abosede, of carrying out what it described as a “brutal and life-threatening assault” on the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Nurse Odusola Oluwakemi.
According to the petition, the incident occurred on January 15, 2026, inside the FMC Abeokuta premises.
The petition, signed by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide on behalf of the ENF, urged the Nigeria Police Force to urgently intervene, stressing that the matter goes beyond internal workplace disagreement and constitutes serious criminal offences.
The ENF explained that the incident reportedly began when some doctors approached the CNO requesting water to carry out a medical procedure. The CNO allegedly informed them that there was no water supply at the time due to an ongoing strike by non-clinical workers.
Hospital management was said to have been notified, after which the Chief Medical Director (CMD) arranged for a temporary water supply.
However, despite the intervention, the forum alleged that the CNO was later summoned and confronted by the HNS over the water situation.
“The CNO calmly explained that the provision of water is not part of her nursing duties, as nurses are trained strictly for clinical and professional responsibilities,” the ENF stated.
The forum further alleged that the confrontation turned violent when the HNS allegedly charged at the CNO and pushed her, causing her to fall, lose consciousness, and sustain injuries.
“She reportedly began bleeding from her mouth, nose, and ears and was rushed to the staff clinic, where she was admitted, treated, and later discharged with medical advice to rest,” the petition said.
The ENF also alleged that while Nurse Odusola was on sick leave, she continued to face threats and harassment from the HNS, leading to a relapse of bleeding and further health complications.
The forum described the alleged actions as showing “recklessness, malice, and a complete disregard for human life.”
Citing relevant provisions of the Criminal Code Act, the ENF argued that the alleged assault amounts to offences including assault occasioning harm, grievous harm, attempted murder, and criminal intimidation.
“These are not internal administrative matters but serious criminal offences that fall squarely within the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force,” the forum stated.
Among its demands, the ENF called for:
- The immediate arrest of the HNS
- A thorough and impartial police investigation
- Prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction
- Protection for the victim and potential witnesses
“Failure to act decisively will send a dangerous message that violence, abuse of power, and attempted killing can be committed with impunity,” the forum warned.
In a separate press statement, the ENF strongly condemned the alleged assault, describing it as “inhumane, unprofessional, and damaging to the integrity of the nursing profession.”
The forum further disclosed that several nurses at FMC Abeokuta have reached out, alleging a long-standing pattern of intimidation, abuse of power, unexplained salary deductions, forceful extortion, and punitive transfers under the current HNS.
“The Elegant Nurses Forum wishes to state clearly that nurses are healthcare professionals, not maids or domestic workers,” the statement said. “Nurses are trained for patient care, safety, and professional health services—not to fetch water or perform non-clinical duties outside their job description.”
The ENF also demanded an independent investigation, the immediate removal of the HNS from office pending the outcome, medical and legal support for the victim, protection for whistleblowers, and a full audit of alleged financial deductions.
“It is deeply shameful that a senior nurse, who should mentor and protect colleagues, is instead accused of conduct that damages the dignity and standards of the nursing profession,” the forum added.
The group concluded by declaring solidarity with the victim and other nurses facing alleged oppression, stating:
“An injury to one nurse is an injury to the entire profession.”
