Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, has sparked fresh debate after stating that some Nigerians earning as little as ₦60,000 monthly are better off than many citizens who relocated abroad in search of greener pastures five years ago.
Speaking during The Morayo Show, Bwala said many Nigerians who migrated to the United Kingdom and other countries with hopes of securing better opportunities are now facing harsh economic realities despite holding university degrees and professional qualifications.
According to him, a significant number now work in care homes, warehouses, and other jobs that do not reflect their educational qualifications.
“Some of you in Nigeria who think you are suffering, you’re better off than your colleagues that japa five years ago,” Bwala said.
He described the situation as a form of “modern-day slavery,” explaining that although some workers earn between £2,600 and £2,800 monthly, most of their income goes toward rent, utility bills, transportation, internet services, and other living expenses.
Bwala noted that after paying these bills, many are left with little disposable income, forcing them to take on two or three jobs just to make ends meet.
He argued that a Nigerian earning ₦60,000 locally may still enjoy the advantage of lower living costs and support from family and friends.
“That ₦60,000 earner can still get support from family and friends, while many abroad have nobody to fall back on,” he added.
The presidential aide also defended the administration of President Tinubu, highlighting ongoing social intervention programmes aimed at reducing the burden on citizens. He cited the 50 percent subsidy on dialysis treatment in federal hospitals and the provision of free cesarean section services in public hospitals as key achievements of the administration.
According to Bwala, the Federal Government plans to expand healthcare support to include additional medical services and prescription drugs as more resources become available.
His comments have generated widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing mixed opinions over his comparison of living conditions at home and abroad.
