A Nigerian diaspora organisation has formally written to President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, calling on her to reject the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country.
The letter, signed by Comrade Frederick Odorige, Global Coordinator of the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN), described Omokri as “a misfit who must be rejected” due to alleged lack of integrity and moral authority.
The group accused the Nigerian government of bypassing proper legislative scrutiny, stating that Omokri “was not screened by Nigeria’s National Assembly and was hurriedly appointed to avoid debate over his controversial profile.”
According to the diaspora group, Omokri’s appointment is politically motivated. They alleged he was “temporarily planted in Mexico by the current Nigerian administration, whose term expires in early 2027, with the expectation that a new government will recall him.”
Odorige also criticised Omokri’s past actions and rhetoric, describing him as “self-seeking, provocative, and divisive,” and cited Omokri’s previous campaign against Bola Tinubu, including his public allegations of criminality against the president.
The letter further claimed that Omokri’s ambassadorial role is a form of “compensation” by the Nigerian government, allowing him to enjoy diplomatic immunity from his controversial activities.
Raising security and diplomatic concerns, GCSDN warned that Omokri’s posting could “pose risks to Mexico, potentially undermine international relations, and organise covert protests against your government.”
The group urged the Mexican government to reject the ambassadorial appointment, citing diplomatic sensitivities, security concerns, and administrative considerations. Copies of the correspondence were also sent to Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the President of the Mexican Senate, and the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria.
