The 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national election has sparked widespread criticism following allegations of technical failures, voting irregularities, and concerns over the credibility of the electronic voting process.
Several lawyers who participated in the election claimed they encountered difficulties accessing the online voting portal, with many reporting failed one-time password (OTP) verification, problems validating their Supreme Court enrolment numbers, and repeated system errors that prevented them from casting their votes.
Some legal practitioners also questioned the integrity of the vote-counting process, alleging that vote tallies continued to rise despite reports that many eligible members were unable to vote.
One of the outspoken critics, legal practitioner A.K. Musa, described the election as deeply flawed, alleging that irregularities and technical issues undermined confidence in the exercise. He also claimed that some lawyers noticed discrepancies between the actual time they voted and the time recorded on the electronic platform, raising concerns about the transparency of the process.
The complaints have generated widespread reactions across the legal community, with many lawyers calling for greater accountability, a comprehensive audit of the electronic voting system, and a transparent review of the election process.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Bar Association had not issued an official response to the allegations of manipulation, technical failures, or voting irregularities.
The NBA conducts its national elections electronically to encourage wider participation among lawyers nationwide. However, the latest complaints have renewed calls for improvements to the association’s digital voting system to safeguard the credibility and integrity of future elections.
It remains unclear whether the NBA Election Committee will extend voting, conduct an independent audit, or announce further measures in response to the growing concerns expressed by members.
