Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, at the age of 52.
SUNTV Global Channel reports that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2026, in an Indian hospital, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The news was confirmed by a family source who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State.
According to the source, who requested anonymity, Senator Akwashiki’s death is a devastating loss not only to Nasarawa North but to the entire state, describing him as a leader whose impact will be felt for many years to come.
“His passing has created a huge vacuum. He was deeply committed to grassroots development and empowerment across Nasarawa North,” the source said.
Widely regarded as one of the most effective senators the district has produced, Akwashiki was praised for his purposeful leadership, people-oriented policies, and numerous constituency projects.
“In the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Godiya Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced. His projects are in virtually every nook and cranny of the constituency,” the source added.
Political observers note that Akwashiki stood out as the only senator from Nasarawa North to successfully re-contest and win a second term, a feat attributed to his strong grassroots connection and visible development initiatives across the zone.
Before his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Senator Akwashiki had built an impressive political career at the state level. He served as Majority Leader of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and later rose to become Deputy Speaker, positions through which he earned a reputation as a disciplined lawmaker and consensus builder.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late senator was widely seen as a key political figure whose influence cut across party lines.
As condolences continue to pour in from political leaders, constituents, and well-wishers across Nigeria, arrangements for his burial are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
SUNTV Global Channel will continue to monitor developments and bring updates as they unfold.
