Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has ordered the immediate commencement of procedures for the procurement of new surveillance drones and advanced security equipment following allegations that five security drones purchased during the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola are missing.
The directive emerged after a series of high-level security meetings held over the past four days to review the state’s security infrastructure and preparedness against rising criminal activities.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, official records indicate that the Osun State Government fully paid for five security drones during the previous administration. However, the devices were reportedly nowhere to be found when Governor Adeleke assumed office in November 2022.
The state government also raised concerns over another security contract valued at approximately N300 million, reportedly awarded under the Oyetola administration to establish communication links between the state’s security command centre and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs).
The Adeleke administration alleged that the project was never executed despite the contract award. The government further claimed that several APCs were later discovered abandoned in different locations across the state before being recovered and refurbished for operational use by the current administration.
Following a review of the security situation, Governor Adeleke directed relevant agencies to begin the process of acquiring new surveillance drones and other modern security gadgets aimed at strengthening intelligence gathering and enhancing efforts to combat crime and banditry across Osun State.
“We are not interested in what has happened in the past. Our focus is on acquiring new drones and other critical security equipment to support our security networks in tackling criminal activities and safeguarding our people,” the governor was quoted as saying.
Governor Adeleke reassured residents of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies.
The state government has not yet disclosed the number of drones to be purchased or the estimated cost of the new security investment.
The development comes amid growing security concerns across parts of Nigeria, particularly following recent kidnapping incidents, including the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of neighbouring Oyo State.
As investigations and public scrutiny continue, questions remain over the whereabouts of the allegedly missing drones and the status of security contracts awarded under the previous administration.
