As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following coordinated military strikes on Iran, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has disclosed that no Nigerian citizen in Iran has formally requested evacuation or emergency assistance.
According to the commission, despite the escalating hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel, no distress call has been received from any Nigerian national currently residing in the country.
NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, clarified the commission’s position while addressing concerns over the safety of Nigerians in the region.
“I’m not saying there are no Nigerians there; I’m only saying nobody has sent any distress call,” he stated.
Balogun noted that while there may be Nigerians living in Iran, none has officially contacted the commission for help amid the ongoing crisis. He further explained that disruptions to international flight operations were expected due to security concerns.
“There may be a temporary ceasefire for two or three days to allow stranded passengers at airports to be evacuated. That has not been done,” he added.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and remains on alert as the situation unfolds.
Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced significant flight disruptions to several Middle-East destinations following airspace closures triggered by the strikes.
In a statement issued by its management, FAAN said the escalating tensions have begun to affect flight operations to and from Nigerian airports.
Flights operated by international carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways have reportedly been cancelled or delayed.
FAAN advised affected passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information, rebooking options, and further travel guidance.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the travelling public that ongoing airspace closures in parts of the Middle East are currently impacting flight operations to and from the region,” the statement read.
The authority assured the public that it continues to collaborate with relevant aviation bodies and airline operators to monitor the evolving situation and provide timely updates.
Regional Tensions Escalate
The travel disruptions followed coordinated military strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel on strategic locations across Iran, including its capital, Tehran.
As the Middle-East crisis deepens, Nigerian authorities say they remain vigilant, emphasizing that assistance mechanisms are in place should any citizen in Iran require evacuation or emergency support.
