The Lagos State Government has sealed a branch of Access Bank located in Victoria Island over allegations of illegally discharging untreated human waste into public drainage systems.
The affected branch, situated on Land Bridge Avenue in Oniru, was shut down during a joint enforcement operation carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Wednesday night.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the action followed credible information from a whistleblower.
According to Wahab, authorities discovered that the facility was “indiscriminately discharging raw faecal matter into the drainages,” resulting in foul odour and environmental degradation, in violation of state environmental laws.
He added that the property would face sanctions in line with existing regulations.
Officials reportedly conducted an on-site inspection before sealing the premises, confirming that untreated sewage was being channelled directly into public drainage systems.
The Lagos State Government has in recent months intensified its crackdown on environmental violations, targeting businesses and property owners engaged in illegal waste disposal practices. Authorities warn that such actions pose serious health risks, contribute to pollution, and damage public infrastructure.
