Traditional rulers in parts of Kwara State have allegedly been warned against receiving Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, following his recent visit to communities affected by persistent insecurity.
Residents of Owa Onire, a community reportedly affected by repeated bandit attacks and displacement, made the allegations while speaking about the aftermath of Igboho’s visit to the area.
Igboho and members of his security team recently visited several communities, including Babanla, parts of the Igbomina region, Ganmu Ahileri and Owa Onire, where they reportedly met residents and inspected areas said to have been deserted because of insecurity.
During the visit, a video circulated online showing members of Igboho’s team expressing concern over the security situation in Owa Onire. The community was described as largely deserted following repeated attacks.
Residents reportedly used the opportunity to express frustration over the security situation and questioned the response of the state government.
However, some residents now claim that the criticism has triggered pressure on traditional rulers and community members.
One resident alleged that traditional rulers in the area were instructed not to receive Igboho again.
“After the video where residents criticised the governor over insecurity went viral, the governor’s camp ordered that no traditional ruler from our region should receive Sunday Igboho again,” the resident claimed.
The resident further alleged that some people were warned against publicly criticising the state government over insecurity and threatened with arrest.
Another resident claimed that influential stakeholders within the Ilorin Emirate had also cautioned traditional rulers against associating with Igboho, amid concerns over his activities and his advocacy for Yoruba interests.
The residents said the development had created anxiety among members of communities already struggling with the consequences of repeated attacks and displacement.
They called for urgent government action to address insecurity and enable displaced residents to safely return to their communities.
The allegations concerning instructions to traditional rulers and threats of arrest have not been independently verified, and no official statement from the Kwara State Government or relevant traditional authorities was included in the account.
