The Kwara State House of Assembly has suspended a lawmaker, Hon. Saba Gideon, who represents Edu State Constituency, for three months over allegations of secretly recording a closed-door meeting of the House and sharing the audio with an unauthorised individual.
The suspension was announced during plenary on Thursday after lawmakers raised concerns that the legislator’s action amounted to contempt of the House and a serious breach of legislative privilege.
According to proceedings on the floor, Hon. Gideon reportedly admitted to recording the private session when the matter was brought up during deliberations. The incident sparked outrage among members, who warned that such actions could undermine the integrity and confidentiality of legislative activities.
The Leader of the House, Hon. Abdulkadir Magaji, moved a motion for Gideon’s suspension without prior notice, citing Order 4, Rule 14 of the House Rules on Privileges and Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017.
“I want to call the attention of this honourable House to an urgent matter in line with Order 4, Rule 14 on rules and privileges,” Magaji said.
“Hon. Saba did something capable of putting this honourable House in jeopardy by releasing sensitive information about its activities to the public.”
Several lawmakers, including Hon. Ganiyu Salaudeen (Omupo), Hon. Musa Kareem (Patigi), Hon. Owolabi Rasaq (Shaare/Oke-Ode), Hon. Abdullahi Danbaba (Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe), and Hon. Oniboki Yunusa (Afon), condemned the act and called for decisive disciplinary action.
While reading the resolution of the House, Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu said the unauthorised recording and circulation of proceedings held in confidence was capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute.
“Hon. Gideon’s conduct amounts to contempt and a clear breach of the privileges of this House,” the Speaker declared.
As part of the resolution, the Assembly directed the suspended lawmaker to submit a written apology to the House within the duration of the suspension.
The suspension, the Speaker confirmed, takes immediate effect.
