BENUE, NIGERIA — A Catholic seminarian of the Otukpo Diocese in Benue State, Kelvin Ochai, has regained his freedom after escaping from the den of gunmen who abducted him in Asa III, Otukpo Local Government Area.
The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo confirmed on Saturday that Ochai successfully escaped from his captors on the evening of July 31, 2026, before making his way to Aliade in neighbouring Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was safely reunited with his family.
In a statement signed by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Church described the seminarian’s safe return as an answer to the prayers of Christians and well-wishers who stood by the family throughout his captivity.
According to the Diocese, Ochai arrived in Aliade unharmed after escaping from the kidnappers’ hideout and trekking to safety. No injuries were reported.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, expressed gratitude to priests, religious communities, lay faithful, and all those who offered prayers and support during the period of the seminarian’s captivity. He described the successful escape as a manifestation of God’s mercy and protection.
Ochai was abducted by armed men in Asa III, Otukpo Local Government Area, one of several communities in Benue State that have witnessed recurring incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks in recent years.
The Diocese did not disclose how the seminarian escaped from his abductors or whether any ransom was demanded or paid before his release. As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident.
The seminarian’s safe return has brought relief to members of the Catholic community, even as concerns continue to grow over the worsening security situation in parts of Benue State, where kidnappings and attacks by armed groups remain a major challenge.
